Electronic Engineering and Computer Science students will be based at YMX’s Cowes office for the summer to gain industry experience
Yokogawa Marex is pleased to welcome two interns for the summer, offering invaluable industry experience to university students while gaining fresh insights and perspectives from the incoming colleagues.
Alvaro Vicente Tarrago is studying for an M Eng in Electronic and General Engineering at King’s College, London and will be part of the team at YMX until mid-September. His main focus will be a research project that looks at applying AI/machine learning to one of Yokogawa Marex’s software products.
Also joining is Hallam Saunders, who will be present in the company’s Cowes office until the end of August. Hallam is at The University of Surrey studying for a BSc in Computer Science and will work with established YMX employees on research for the future direction of Yokogawa Marex’s lead product, Exaquantum.
“Yokogawa Marex has a strong commitment to engage with and provide opportunities for students as they embark upon their career in software development through our work experience, internships, apprenticeships and graduate programmes,” explained Wayne Matthews, Yokogawa Marex’s Divisional Director.
“Internships provide a great opportunity for students to gain experience in the workplace and for us as a company to learn, as they bring new ways of working and fresh ideas – and maybe become the future of our team. Whatever they choose to do we are proud to have helped them in some way on their journey,” Wayne added.
Furthering Yokogawa Marex’s commitment to nurturing talent here on the Island, as demonstrated by Wayne’s regular visits to school and college careers events, both Hallam and Alvaro are Island residents when not away at university.
“I had heard of Yokogawa as a global company before, and through a now retired former employee I had heard about Yokogawa Marex specifically. I was born on the Isle of Wight and have lived here my whole life, so I was glad to find this kind of internship so close to home,” explained Hallam.
It’s a similar story for Alvaro, who is working towards his masters. “I met the company at a careers fair during my VI Form, which got me interested in the wide spectrum of tech careers in this industry. I had walked past YMX’s offices a few times, but I only recently discovered just how big of a company Yokogawa is globally.
“I call the Island my home so for me, retaining and attracting talent, and helping opportunities thrive locally, are very important. YMX’s open arms to young professionals or students like me is an invaluable chance at gaining an edge in a market as competitive as the one today, while contributing to developing the local industry.”
